Picture Gallery, Paxton House

Beamishi ~ Reed Stanzas (String Quartet No 3)
Mendelssohn ~ Quartet no 2 in A minor, Op 13*
Schumanni ~ Piano Quintet

The internationally renowned Elias Quartet makes its Paxton debut with two pillars of the chamber music repertoire. Schubert’s late quartet, the deeply anguished Death and the Maiden, is based on his song of the same name. Schumann’s exuberant Piano Quintet, written for his pianist wife Clara to perform, is considered one of his finest compositions. The programme opens with the acclaimed Scottish based composer Sally Beamish’s third String Quartet. These Reed Stanzas, written on the Isle of Harris, draw their inspiration from the Hebridean and East Anglian coastlines, along with the Gaelic roots of the Quartet’s 2nd violinist, Donald Grant.

*The Festival has recently been informed that, due to a recent arm injury, violist Martin Saving will be unable to perform and his place will be taken by ex Lindsay Quartet violist, Robin Ireland. This has necessitated a change to the published programme: Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet will be replaced by Mendelssohn’s deeply passionate Quartet No. 2 in A minor Op 13. The Quartet and Music at Paxton apologise for this programme change and ask for your understanding. – May 2017
